  • Over the last days, the AI Labs issued various warnings related frontier models "existential" risks, and a call to slow down and regulate. Saturday: Dario Amodei (Anthropic) publishes "We Must Pace the Frontier." His point: since this summer, progress has accelerated because AI is now building the next generation of AI. His ask is not to stop training, but to give alignment work time to catch up and to let independent evaluators inside the labs. Same day: Sam Altman and Elon Musk back him publicly. Three rivals who agree on almost nothing agreeing on this. Altman rules out an OpenAI IPO this year. Monday: the US President calls it a "HOAX" and a "SICK conspiracy," and says his presence in the Oval Office is guardrail enough. AI stocks dip. Speaker Johnson expects the labs at the White House within days. My quick take on this : - When the (main) builders themselves ask for brakes, that is a strong signal. Maybe some are buying time to catch up, maybe there is a commercial angle behind it. But the most likely explanation is also the simplest: the risk is real. And it is. - It is now clear AI needs to be governed. The open question is by whom. The frontier labs themselves? Self-regulation by the players in the race rarely holds. Governments? Fair, but they move at legislative speed while capabilities compound every few months. And what happens when a government simply refuses to regulate (see the news)? - In parallel with the race between labs, the US vs China race is itself becoming "existential" in the political narrative. When slowing down is framed as losing, safety becomes a "detail". That is the most dangerous dynamic of all. And from my perspective, this also means every company should be building its own guardrails if a regulation is not an option here.
