Somewhere along the way, being reliable became being available. A message arrives at 9:47 PM. It’s not urgent. Nobody asked you to reply tonight. But you saw it. Now you’re thinking about it while having dinner, watching a movie, or spending time with your family. You tell yourself you’ll just send a quick reply. And you do. The reply takes 30 seconds. Getting your mind back takes a lot longer. I don’t think we talk enough about this part of modern work. Nobody has to explicitly ask you to work all evening. Sometimes knowing that someone could need you is enough to keep a part of your brain at work. And the strange thing is, we’ve started treating this as a positive quality. He’s always available. She replies immediately. You can reach him anytime. When did those become compliments? I respect people who are there when it matters. But I also respect someone who can leave a message unanswered until morning without feeling guilty. I’m still figuring out where that line is. When did “I’ll reply tomorrow” start feeling rude?
I searched one word in my inbox: "introduction." 2018: "I leave the rest to you." 2019: "They should be able to handle it — potentially all of it." 2025: "I will let you gentlemen talk amongst yourselves." Different people. Different countries. Seven years apart. Same sentence. Every serious client we've signed in 17 years arrived inside an email like this — written by someone else, spending their own name so a stranger would trust mine. I used to think our best marketing was the work. The ads, the funnels, the sites. It isn't. Our best marketing is a sentence other people write when we're not in the room. You can't ask for that sentence. You can only earn the next one.
“We got 300 leads this month.” “Great. How many did we actually speak to?” “…” That pause tells you more than the dashboard. I’ve seen how easy it is to celebrate the wrong number in marketing. A cheap lead looks great in a report. But someone still has to call that person. And call again. And explain the offer to someone who might not even remember filling out the form. Meanwhile, the marketing dashboard is green. I think this is where marketing and sales often misunderstand each other. Marketing is celebrating what came in. Sales is dealing with what came in. And the business owner just wants to know if any of it is turning into money. All three are looking at the same campaign. All three can walk away with a completely different opinion about whether it worked. I’m curious about something. Salespeople and business owners: what’s one thing marketers celebrate that you wish they’d stop celebrating?
