Years ago, I put together a presentation called Science/Art. I recently went back to it and realised that many of the questions feel even more relevant in the age of AI. What can statistics learn from Picasso? What does Pollock have to do with fluid dynamics? Why can a graph change the way a clinician thinks? And what might an analytical team learn from jazz? I have turned the original idea into a longer article: What Science Can Learn from Art. Ten observations on abstraction, perception, modelling, visualisation, uncertainty and collaboration.
Stephen King writes about writing fiction in his book On Writing. When I read it, I felt much of his advice has surprisingly little to do with fiction. Read a lot. Write a lot. Start with the situation. Use simple language. Cut ruthlessly. Make the reader want to continue. And then I started wondering what happens if you apply those principles to something much less literary: the corporate business case, the power point presentations, the status update meetings. The connection is stronger than I expected. A presentation meeting should not be the event that starts the thinking. Instead, I have come up with :- Read continuously. Think continuously. Write continuously. Present occasionally. I have explored the idea in this article.
