Don't ask people to interview when the job is taken. It's cruel. You may think they don't know. They know. (Original post by Sarah Baker Andrus) They can tell you're not taking the process seriously: ↳ You delay communicating (or even ghost them) ↳ You don't put your best people in the room ↳ You don't ask meaningful questions ↳ You avoid sharing details Then, they see an internal candidate announcing their new role on LinkedIn a few weeks later. (Think they're not checking? Of course they're checking.) I was in HR, I know why this happens. Someone told you that you needed an external candidate for "policy." That's a bs policy, and most hiring managers know it. Meanwhile, sincere candidates with a genuine interest waste precious resources: ↳ Time preparing ↳ Transportation ↳ Wardrobe ↳ Childcare It costs time & money to show up, virtual or in person. And what about your internal candidate? They're probably sweating bullets, worried you may go with someone else, and wracking their brain over why you can't just give them the promotion. I don't blame them. Show some respect. These are real people with real hopes and dreams. Just stop it. This message brought to you by a career coach who has gotten one too many angry calls about this practice lately. Enough is enough. Credit to Sarah Baker Andrus ( go follow her)
Most arguments about which email is better end one of two ways. The most senior person in the room picks, or everyone gets tired and agrees. I'd rather let the list decide. Send one version to half of it and the other to the rest, and see which one sells more. The one you were sure about loses more often than you'd think.
