Pleats Please, Issey Miyake (1993) I utterly adore the work of Issey Miyake. Now, this may be because I know very little about fashion, and I'm attracted to clever sculptural forms. Issey's work often is closer to archtecture than textiles. For Pleats Please, launched in 1993, the garment is cut and sewn first, at two to three times its finished size. The oversized piece is then laid between sheets of paper and fed through a heat press. The pleats go into a finished dress, not into a bolt of cloth, so they follow the shape the dress was cut for rather than a grid. This works because of what the fibre is. Polyester is thermoplastic. Heat it, shape it, cool it, and the arrangement holds. The pleat is not pressed into the cloth. It is remembered by it. No ironing, no dry cleaning, and the garment comes back to its shape after every wash. Miyake had already tested the idea under load, making pleated costumes in 1991 for William Forsythe's dancers at Ballett Frankfurt, who had to move in them properly. So the look of the thing, that ridged, faintly geological surface, is not a style laid over the top. It is the behaviour of the fibre made visible. It all feels so sci-fi too maybe which is why I'm so drawn to it.
