Sustainability Leadership | GTM Strategy | Co-Founder @ Leafr
I’m co-founder of Leafr, which provides sustainability talent on demand. We have a vetted bench of 1,000+ independent consultants and have worked with hundreds of clients. Before that I ran SupplyCompass as co-founder and CEO, growing it to 25 people across the UK and India and raising £2.5m in VC funding. I’ve also led revenue at a post-Series A SaaS company, done some work as a fractional CRO, and advised many Seed and Series A founders on go-to-market strategy. I’m good at working out how a company actually grows, explaining it plainly enough that a team can get on with it, and putting in the systems that keep it working. I’m happiest when things are still undefined, when the job is to try things, learn quickly and find a way through. I trained as a civil engineer and am a chartered project manager, so I tend to think in structures and systems — but I’ve learned it only works when it’s grounded in the customer’s voice: their real pain, and what they actually need. I've been a big adopter of AI and lean on it heavily in my day to day workflows. It’s genuinely changed the maths of what a small team can get done. I build with it as much as use it to create micro-products that double as lead generation, internal tools that take the grind out of operations, and agents that join up work across teams.

A Head of Sustainability's inbox, 9:04am, Monday: 📩 EcoVadis: "Your assessment expires in 30 days" 📩 Sales: "URGENT — tender needs carbon numbers by Wed" 📩 Facilities: "RE: RE: RE: utility data" (no attachment) 📩 CEO: "Saw a competitor's net zero ad — should we be doing this?" 📩 Legal: "Comments on the sustainability page (see tracked changes)" (214 tracked changes) 📩 A software vendor: "AI-powered ESG platform" (4th email this month) 📩 An employee: "Why does the canteen still use plastic cups?" 📩 CDP: "Deadline reminder" Strategy work completed by Friday: 0 minutes.
The 5 types of Head of Sustainability: 1. The Firefighter - hired after a client threatened to leave over ESG scores. Entire role is questionnaires. Dreams of strategy. 2. The Believer - took a pay cut to move from consulting. Runs on purpose. Currently being tested on that. 3. The Translator - ex-finance or ex-ops. Speaks fluent CFO. The board actually listens. Other sustainability people find this suspicious. 4. The Veteran - was doing this when it was called CSR. Has seen three hype cycles and two backlashes. Unshockable. 5. The Accidental - was in legal/HR/facilities, got handed ESG in a restructure. Learning acronyms at a terrifying rate. Doing better than they think. Which one are you? Or what did I miss?
For the sustainability leader reading this at 9pm: You watched your discipline go from "the future of business" to a restructuring line item in eighteen months. You kept going. You did the CSRD prep that got deleted, the questionnaires nobody reads, the data chase nobody thanks you for, the board slide that got 4 minutes. You kept going. It stopped being glamorous around 2023. The backlash is loud. The work is quiet. The regulations slowed, but the physics didn't, and every serious company knows it. The work matters. Keep going. You're not behind. You're early.
