  • Google: "Backlinks are not a top 3 ranking factor." Me and 130 other SEOs just told Google they're wrong! That's the recent findings from Cyrus Shepard 2026 expert ranking factors survey I was invited to participate in. Backlinks were ranked #2 among the factors where #1 was content relevance and #3 was content quality. This survey comes after Google said backlinks weren't a top 3 ranking factor in 2023. People have even gone so far as to say backlinks are dead. Just remember, Google telling you what they want to rank vs what actually shows up in the search results is very different. This also again goes back to the fact that the 80/20 of SEO is still a thing and drives the results. You could've done this poll any time in the last 30 years and backlinks would've been in the top 3 ranking factors. Before you run off and do your shiny AI objects and hacks remember what actually matters to rank. P.S. This is not an invitation for the dear sirs and hello dears to message me your spam, thank you.

  • I'm a tech SEO, but failed miserably every time I tried to learn to code. Turns out, I never "needed" to. When I started my journey to become a tech SEO, I was under the impression I needed to learn how to code and basically build a website. Maybe that was the case 30 years ago, but now the majority of CMS's are very friendly for beginners. Additionally, there's enough info on the internet to look up solutions and now we have AI, which has made things drastically easier. With that out of the way and as the more work I did, I realized being curious and being a problem solver has often gone further, than knowing everything. So If you're trying to become a tech SEO, you don't need to learn how to code. But will it make your life easier and you could potentially make more money? 100%

  • SEO isn’t dying. It’s just not enough anymore. I spent the majority of my career focused on ranking high on Google, getting people to a website and having them complete an action. That was the key to success and that’s how the buyer’s journey worked. And if you did that well, you were a great SEO and could make a lot of money. This worked till a few years ago when LLMs showed up and what we know of SEO has been forever changed. Google and LLMs now can give you an answer or solve your need without ever sending them to your website. One thing that has become more important than ever is building a brand and how you’re portrayed on the web. It’s forced me to change the exact way I approach SEO and finally become a marketer. I personally welcome the change. I like being challenged. Profound’s story inspires me, and they are built for this challenge. They started out as AEO and visibility platform and have morphed into a full marketing platform. Because the problem marketers are trying to solve is beyond just improving your AI visibility. It’s understanding where your brand appears, how to influence that and involves working with multiple teams within your organization.  To continue to be ready for this new world, Profound just announced a $180 million Series D at a $1.8 billion valuation. The path forward to be successful in SEO/ AEO is not just SEO and AEO. It’s mastering and having all your marketing channels working together in one place. Profound is giving a live demo of the AI Marketer later this month so you can see it in action. Check out the live demo on Sept. 30: https://lnkd.in/gPktjMy2 #ad
