Our close went from 8 hours to 45 minutes | I teach FP&A analysts to build forecasting, close automation and AI systems instead of filing tickets | Senior FP&A @ Salla | The FP&A Engineer
Our month-end close took 8 hours. It now takes 45 minutes. I didn't hire anyone to do that. I built the system myself, and every week I write about how, for finance people who'd rather build than file tickets. Most finance teams don't need more people. They need fewer processes that shouldn't exist. I'm a Senior FP&A lead at Salla, Saudi Arabia's largest e-commerce platform, with eight years across SaaS, FMCG (Nestlé MENA) and Telecom (Vodafone Egypt). Along the way: a GMV forecasting model running under 5% error, built without a data scientist, and roughly $800K recovered at Vodafone from a vendor portfolio nobody had reconciled. None of that came from being good at Excel. It came from treating finance as an engineering problem: find the process that shouldn't exist, delete it, put a system where it was. That's what The FP&A Engineer is. Every issue is a build log: the actual model, the actual prompt, the actual SQL, plus an honest note on what automation still can't do. Outside the spreadsheet: 15 years as a competitive synchronized swimmer, which is where I learned that precision is a practice, not a talent. Specialties: FP&A, rolling forecasts, financial modeling, close automation, SQL and ClickHouse, Python, AI for finance, prompt engineering, board reporting, SaaS and e-commerce metrics, GMV, unit economics. New issue every week from FP&A Engineer

I got so many messages lately, how a person can pivot into FP&A or even start from scratch for fresh graduates, and I always believe it is simpler than what you think. You need to have a plan, and it is not a long term one. 90 days plan - 3 hours each day. 1- Learn the basic of accounting and financial statements. 2- Work with excel every day. 3- Learn what is the cycle looks like on a daily basis. 4- Build your portfolio, and it is never too early to do that. FP&A could be the most rewarding career and one of the decisions that you will never regret if you choose to make.
I am always seen myself lucky to start my career in the FP&A and while i had the chance several times to shift career but i always return back to it, cause it always give you the flexibility to work with many hats on. And it is one of the career paths that give you the chance to have parallel moves and never start from scratch.
I am always saying in today’s market where everyone is using the AI to write the resumé, application answers. Using it even in the case study and presentation, you need to think of how you can be unique and apply more specifically. 1- use specific requirement in the job posting like : worked in tech industry before, SQL or Python Things rarely you can find in the candidates. 2- Try to approach to the hiring manager and have conversation with him. 3- Build a portfolio where you can attach your projects you previously worked on. 4- As I am always believe the network and referral is the strongest channel among all other channels. In the next posts i will help to explain how FP&A can establish portfolio around their work. Because not only creative people should have it.
