There's real signal coming out of Scotland's blockchain scene The monthly Blockchain Scotland meetups have become a gathering point for people who care about what's actually being built. Recent sessions have featured speakers from Consensys, Gnosis, the Ethereum Foundation and most recently Scroll, who shared how zk-rollups and privacy-preserving stablecoins are reshaping DeFi infrastructure. #BlockchainScotland #Ethereum #DeFi #zkRollups
The first three talks from the Edinburgh DeFi Summit 2025 have now been shared by Blockchain Scotland and some interesting overlaps are already emerging. • Matthew Dawson (Ethereum Foundation) set out why enterprises are increasingly choosing Ethereum for tokenisation and stablecoins. • Ian Wallis (Consensys / Linea) explained how Layer 2s are making DeFi infrastructure practical for use cases such as treasuries and payments. • Tom Wilkinson (The Scottish Government) showed how the same tools can support decentralised public goods and collective intelligence. What stands out is not the differences but the consensus. All three talks, from very different perspectives, came back to the same themes: • Ethereum as the backbone • Layer 2s as the bridge • Credible neutrality as the anchor This is unusual. Conferences often separate enterprise adoption, crypto-native innovation, and public sector thinking. In Edinburgh, they were brought together, and the result was a shared vision of how finance, technology, and public goods can converge on common infrastructure.
Crypto payments are still too hard. Moving money across borders is slow, expensive, and often excludes the people who need it most. At October’s Blockchain Scotland meetup, Leonardo Park from Scroll outlined how the project is approaching that challenge with zk-rollup technology. Coming straight from Korea Blockchain Week, Token 2049, and Scroll’s Open Campus programme in Kuala Lumpur, he described how research on Ethereum scalability is translating into early products and pilots. Scroll’s stated goal is to make on-chain payments as easy and reliable as tapping a card, for both business and personal use. Leonardo discussed the Euclid upgrade in spring, which improved proof generation and reduced fees, moving the network closer to full decentralisation. It's now the first zk-rollup to reach Stage 1: Vitalik Buterin’s benchmark for a true Layer 2. The Cloak privacy layer adds optional confidentiality, while the upcoming USX stablecoin is planned to combine three features that rarely align: privacy, yield, and spendability. The conversation quickly moved from architecture to adoption. Scroll currently supports ether.fi’s cash card, offering 3 % cashback and seeing growth in Brazil and across Latin America. A year-long developer programme in Kuala Lumpur opens next year. Audience questions added useful perspective: 1️⃣ What does Stage 1 really mean? Leonardo said it’s about making everything open and secure so users can trust their funds won’t be lost, citing the Bybit hack as a reminder. 2️⃣ How does Scroll differ from other L2s? He argued that Scroll reached this milestone first and has avoided security incidents, supported by the Ethereum Foundation and Vitalik Buterin. 3️⃣ How will the USX stablecoin stand out? Through privacy via Cloak zk, an estimated 12 % yield combining TradFi + DeFi strategies, and gas-less payments intended for everyday use. On regulation, Leonardo said compliance is integral: USX will follow the Genius Act, and Scroll’s team includes co-founder Sandy Peng, formerly of Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission. The session underlined how projects like Scroll are starting to balance scalability, privacy and compliance, and that these questions now matter as much as the technology itself. #BlockchainScotland #Ethereum #zkRollups #DeFi
