Arizona Attorney (pending admission) | Author |
Most law students wait to “become” a lawyer before they start building their voice. It costs us visibility, opportunities, and momentum. I’m a third-year law student, husband, and father, on track to practice in Arizona after graduation in 2026. Instead of waiting, I document the journey 3–4 times a week on LinkedIn. I share what it actually looks like balancing law school, family, and the path into the legal profession. Along the way, I’ve learned this: your story is your advantage. I also help other law students and legal professionals do the same.

If you told this kid 22 years ago that he would fail the Arizona Bar Exam on his first try... You would have been dead wrong! Happy to announce that this lil' pumpkin (me, if that wasn't clear) passed the Arizona Bar Exam with a score high enough to practice in any UBE jurisdiction. I can't tell you exactly why, but "Lawyer" was my only answer to the question: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Now, here I am (with a few procedural steps to go)! Words can never capture how grateful I am to the actual village of teachers, mentors, family and friends that has supported me in this pursuit.
One week into my first job as a Law Clerk. Before I started, people kept asking: "𝘈𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘥?" "𝘈𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘥?" "𝘋𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘢𝘸?" My answer was always the same: 𝘕𝘰𝘱𝘦. Because I'd already done the work that made the fear irrelevant. Two things set my mind at ease before I ever walked in the door: 1. The People. I knew people who knew people before I applied. I asked around. I heard good things and then confirmed them myself once I met my now-colleagues. Beyond the formal interviews, I showed up to the networking events I knew my future employer would send people to, and introduced myself. Then I stayed visible: connected on LinkedIn, engaged with their posts, celebrated their wins. 2. The Program. This was the real draw. My firm runs a formal training program for first-years involving substantive casework and face time with clients starting day one. I have mentors who show up in person, invested in my growth from the start. I craved that structure. Now I'm growing inside it. Landing your first job won't erase the uncertainty on its own but the groundwork you lay months (maybe years) earlier will. Starting anything knew is a step into the dark. But you can make bring confidence into it by doing a little leg work in advance.
The credit belongs to the man in the podcast arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood… I stepped into Tony Albrecht’s arena a few weeks back & the episode is live now. We talk about: 1. Networking Strategies that worked for me to build on LinkedIn and land legal jobs from it. 2. The "Back Door": The idea that your personal connections are the “back door" to jobs & are more effective than online application portals. 3. Faith: How my faith helps me be industrious.
