If your company wants to be in entertainment, I have one question: Who’s the talent? I got my start at MTV in the 90s finding hosts. Great content still needed someone we trusted to take us through it. TRL had Carson Daly. The music was the content. The artists were the IP. MTV had the distribution. Carson gave us a reason to come back. I think brands are discovering that same need now. They’re developing IP, building content partnerships and distributing across more platforms than ever. And somewhere in all of that is A PERSON. 👉 Sometimes it’s a creator. 👉 Sometimes it’s an executive. 👉 Sometimes it’s someone already inside the company whose talent hasn’t been recognized yet. Finding that person is talent development. And I’m excited to see it finally becoming a business strategy again. Distribution will get you in front of people. Great talent will give them a reason to come back.
Being good on camera doesn’t make someone talent. I learned that pretty quickly developing talent for television. I met plenty of people who knew how to audition, give a great answer and work a camera. The people who stood out gave me: 👉 a point of view. 👉 a reason to lean in. 👉 something I couldn’t get from anyone else. Sometimes they didn’t even know they had it yet. That is my favorite part of talent development: recognizing something in someone before they recognized it in themselves. I still see that talent today in creators, executives and people inside companies who have never thought of themselves as “talent.” Being polished is useful. Being recognizable is valuable. “Being different is better than better.” Shout out to Sally Hogshead for the inspiring quote I keep coming back to when looking for a little direction in what I do next…
I’m a really good cheerleader, and chances are you are too, if you: 👉 know how to show up. 👉 know who to support. 👉 know when to encourage. I tend to cheer for my own greatness by finding it in other people. I enjoy recognizing talent in a way that gives people permission to use more of it. That return on energy is what has fueled my creative career all these years. Sometimes we don’t need another critic or a devil’s advocate. Sometimes we just need to be reminded of our greatness. Sometimes we discover our own talent by recognizing it in someone else. 👉 Great leaders will always share recognition 👉 Bad leaders will withhold it for themselves I have always felt most talented when I’m working with someone who’s truly aligned and in flow with their skillset. TL;DR: You’ll know you’re supporting the right people because they activate something inside you as well. That’s the ROI no one talks about.
