non-EU student in Germany building in public
I am a non-EU master’s student building a business, from scratch, alongside my studies here in Germany. I recently received permission from ABH to run a business. I document the entire journey publicly, week by week: paperwork, progress, setbacks. Before Germany, I spent 5+ years in FinTech, PropTech, and startup operations, most recently as a Founder's Associate at a blockchain-based asset fractionalisation company, where I supported regulatory approval, financial planning, partnerships, and daily operations. If you're building something in Germany, or want to watch what it looks like to build as a non-EU founder, then Herzlich Wilkommen 😊 Feel free to say Hi 👋 or drop me an Email: [email removed]

Week 14 of starting my own business as a non-EU student in Germany I received this welcome letter from the chamber of commerce in 🇩🇪 Now, I’m excited and a bit scared too 😅 Doing this alone is intimidating considering the penalties if anything goes wrong. Btw here’s the timeline of my journey so far to keep me going and maybe motivate others on a similar path: Week 0: decided to start a business, applied for permission from the ABH Week 5: permitted to start a business as a student 🎉 Week 6: first paying client. Also the first time I got paid to make videos. Same ones I was already making, just paid this time Week 7: started a WhatsApp community for student founders. guided few fellow students on how I did my process. one rejection and one approval until now. Week 9: Business registered with Gewerbeamts Week 13: comeback from sickness, injury and exams. registered on Elster (taxes) Now: Wilkommen in der IHK 🎉 The screens behind me are DAAD and my YouTube channel. Both played a major role, one before I came to Germany and one after. Bureaucracy is still there. Uncertainty is still there. So is the momentum.
Week 10 of starting my own business as a non-EU student in Germany First, thank you. You've been here since week 0. I almost quit somewhere in the middle. some weeks I still want to. This week I checked my numbers which are not important if they don't serve anyone: 1M+ views Instagram; 400K+ impressions LinkedIn Luckily they did. I received hundreds of messages from fellow students and senior professionals. Students who thought freelancing as an international student was straight up illegal, now applying for their own permission. A lot of them mid-process right now. Some planning their move from outside germany. Some EU and german citizens with no visa issues at all. For them it's the mindset. that's the part I couldn't have planned. 10 weeks of documenting everything. My study in germany experience, visa delays, permission from the Ausländerbehörde, starting a business, finances and a lot more. All this started with "Leider…" emails telling me I wasn't enough. I was in Finland when I first decided to do it all in public. And now I have you guys helping me go further ahead. So nothing more to say in this post. Thank you! If this series changed anything for you (how you think, what you applied for, what you started) tell me below 👇. Maybe it helps someone out there going through the same.
Take me 9 months back and I’ll focus on these 3 Ls as a new non-EU student in Germany 1. Language I arrived with B1 German. Here it converts to A2. Enough for basic conversation. Not enough for technical or detailed discussion. Every interview wants fließend Deutsch (C1+). But even B1 carried me through the parts that mattered: Gewerbeanmeldung (business registration), document prep for Ausländerbehörde permissions. Yesterday I interviewed for a founder’s associate role. The founder’s main concern? German. 2. License I have never met a student with a driving license who struggled to find work. One of my favourite startup roles? It required one. 3. LinkedIn I landed in Germany with 2000+ founders and professionals already in my network. Before coming to germany, I used to have conversations with seniors here to see how work actually gets done here. Linkedin is still the most popular platform for hiring after referrals. Now when I meet a student with an inactive or unoptimized profile, something in me itches to fix it. I also used a free ChatGPT prompt to optimize LinkedIn profiles, mine and my friends’. Comment “linkedin” and I’ll send it over. Which L have you built, or are you working on right now?
