  • 🏛️ While challenger banks grab headlines for cross-border expansion, French banking groups are quietly doing the same thing - • BNP Paribas acquired HSBC Private Bank Germany: a targeted move into wealth management in one of Europe's largest economies. • Groupe BPCE has been the most acquisitive, picking up Nagelmackers and novobanco in Belgium and Portugal respectively, building retail and private banking presence in two markets at once. • Crédit Agricole took a 22.8% stake in Banco BPM (Italy) alongside its existing Crédit Agricole Deutschland operations, a dual play combining a strategic minority stake with direct organic presence. • Crédit Mutuel Alliance Fédérale acquired OLB in Germany, extending its footprint into the DACH region. The pattern across all four: Germany, Italy, Belgium and Portugal are the priority targets: mature, fragmented, or consolidating markets where a domestic acquisition buys instant scale, licenses, and customer books that would take years to build organically. It's a useful counterpoint to the neobank expansion story we keep discussing. Where Revolut and N26 use API-first, branch-light models to enter new markets fast, French incumbents are pursuing the inverse: consolidation through M&A, betting that scale and local balance-sheet depth remain the more durable moat. Two very different playbooks for the same goal: becoming a genuinely pan-European bank. Which one wins probably depends on whether the battleground ends up being daily transactional banking (challenger territory) or credit, wealth and corporate banking (where incumbent scale still counts for a lot). Which model do you think scales better across Europe by 2030: organic digital expansion, or acquisition-led consolidation? Pic source: Inside Banking

  • 💡 Non-banks are winning business banking, and Most Banks Aren’t Fighting Back - by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) This BCG research puts numbers on a pattern that should sound familiar by now: $2 trillion in SMB deposits, generating 5x the profitability of consumer relationships, quietly fragmenting toward non-bank alternatives, not through account closures, but through workflow migration. • The economics make this the wrong segment to lose. SMB operating accounts run an ~11% loan-to-deposit ratio and generate ~25% of revenue from fee-based products. This isn't a deposit play, it's the gateway to payments, payroll, receivables, and lending. Lose the workflow, and you're left holding a commodity account. • Non-bank competition isn't one type of threat, it's five. Lending-led players, deposits-and-payments challengers, specialized vertical SaaS, digital challenger banks, and now large tech/horizontal ISVs embedding agentic finance directly into accounting platforms. Each one takes a different entry point into the same relationship. • Banks are watching the wrong signal. Primary-bank switching is a lagging indicator. By the time it shows up in the data, payroll has already left, invoicing runs elsewhere, and the deposit account has become a holding tank rather than a relationship anchor. The real signals: payment routing changes, declining cash balances inconsistent with business performance, sit unused in transaction data most banks aren't analyzing. • Banks still hold the stronger hand, if they use it. Branch access, trust, and a relationship manager who's seen a business through two credit cycles are structural advantages no neobank can replicate overnight. BCG's survey data confirms it: trust and knowledgeable branch staff outrank rates and rewards as reasons SMBs recommend their bank. The risk isn't the absence of an advantage, it's complacency about activating it. The prescription is direct: defense means using transaction data to catch attrition before it's visible in balances; offense means becoming the operating system for the business, embedding cash flow, invoicing, and reconciliation into the bank relationship rather than ceding that layer to a fintech. This is the same structural tension we keep seeing across retail, SME, and now business banking: modular, workflow-embedded competitors move faster than banks built on legacy, siloed cores can respond. The technology gap and the relationship-erosion problem aren't separate issues, they're the same one.
