Last week I officially started my first role post-graduation. (I know, scary.) I've joined Trade Harmonizer as one of two new commercial hires. And it ticks one of my loves in life: startups solving niche problems. Here's the niche. Overpaid import duties don't announce themselves. They sit quietly in invoices from freight forwarders. Processed, paid, forgotten. It adds up to over £2 billion lost by UK businesses every single year. Trade Harmonizer finds what's been lost, recovers it, and makes sure it stays recovered. Most people don't think about the hidden costs buried in global trade. From now on, every day, I will be. Can't wait to get stuck in. (Anyway, if you import into the UK, feel free to hit me up.)
Pen and paper is the future Pen and paper is the future Pen and paper is the future The last month I've really realised that AI is good BUT pen and paper is better. I used Claude for EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING. Every thought I had was handed over to Claude before I ever finished forming it myself. And it killed my ability to write (and maybe my ability to think lol). I sat down to rewrite a post for a client and couldn't change a single line. My head was so full of AI junk that I had nothing of my own to put in. Friction is the whole point. It doesn't matter if you're writing a book or on a sales call — being stuck is what made you better. So I changed the order… Paper first, tools second. My sticky notes for anything I'd throw in a chat window at 9am. The notebook for actual thinking (objections I didn't have an answer for). The fountain pen because it's slow enough that I only write things worth writing. The result. Same output. Completely different person producing it.
It surprises me that the highest usage of Claude in America is for content creation and copywriting. I'm part of that 20% (well actually I'm not, I'm not even American. BUT STILL). I always thought AI would be used more for coding or research. Not writing. It's almost disappointing. Writing is meant to be a personal thing. As a child I wrote stories. I genuinely thought I'd be an author. These days I write sales emails, which is a bit of a fall, but both of those were mine. It shocks me how many people don't want that. I'd much rather read a poorly written LinkedIn post than a perfect one written by AI. People want real stories, written by real hands. ps. tell me I'm romanticising this. I might be.
