Someone clicks your company logo on a LinkedIn ad. Under the lead generation objective you pay for that click. Under website visits, the same click on the same ad is free. Same creative, same person, same finger. What decides the bill is which objective you picked when you built the campaign. It is not only the logo. Under lead generation you also pay when someone opens the social pill, the small window that shows who liked or commented. Website visits, website conversions and job applicants all treat both of those as non chargeable. Now hold that next to what the objective is supposed to do. A click on your LinkedIn Page opens your LinkedIn Page. It cannot turn into a lead. So the lead generation objective bills you for clicks that cannot produce the thing you selected it for. To be fair to LinkedIn, the engagement objective charges for almost everything, including see more and social actions. That one is coherent. You asked for engagement and you are paying for engagement. Lead generation is the one that does not fit.
Profile language is a required field on every LinkedIn ad set. There are 35 options. One of them turns the filter off. Select English and your ads go to everyone in the locations you are targeting, whatever language sits on their profile. LinkedIn's own wording: all member accounts in the location your ad set is targeting, regardless of the language member accounts have selected on their profiles. Select anything other than English and it filters properly. Only members whose profile language matches will see the ad. So picture two advertisers running in Germany. Same titles, same budget. One leaves the field on English and reaches the whole market. The other selects German, because that is the careful thing to do, and reaches a slice of it. The careful one shrank their own audience and the interface gave no sign that would happen. There is a detail that tells you LinkedIn understands this. Their own advice, when a language audience is too narrow, is to run another ad set targeting the same locations in English to reach some of the same people. That is the documentation telling you to select English in order to escape the filter. Two things to file away. None of this applies to Sponsored Messaging, where every language filters. And once you have selected a language and added an ad, you cannot change it.
Remember posting YT music videos to Facebook? https://lnkd.in/d9FAYX8s Feels like music is missing on LinkedIn and B2B in general. 🔇 Any B2B bands out there? 😆
