I speak startup language, not just legal jargon. I work with founders, compliance officers, and enterprises building across Africa and internationally. I’ve worked on everything from aviation tech compliance to insurance-tech platforms I also help US tech founders navigate the legal complexities of expanding internationally—whether you’re scaling to Africa, setting up remote teams, managing cross-border data flow, or building compliant fintech infrastructure.

Everyone tells founders what they want to hear. I told mine to start over. He thanked me for it. He was 6 months into building the wrong thing. Not a small pivot. The core assumption was off, and every sprint since had been building on top of a bad foundation. Nobody had told him. His devs were shipping. His investors were nodding. Everyone around him had a reason to keep the momentum going. I didn't have that reason. So I said it plainly: this doesn't work, and here's why. Scrap it. Rebuild from the actual problem. He went quiet for a minute. Then he said something I didn't expect. He said nobody had given him real advice in months. Just encouragement. That's the job most advisors won't do. Founders don't need another person telling them they're doing great. They need someone willing to cost them six months to save them two years. If your lawyer, advisor, or mentor hasn't disagreed with you lately, ask yourself why. (Bonus: A very old throwback picture of me)
If you’ve ever sold software to a mid-sized company or an enterprise, you’ve probably run into this sentence in a procurement email: “Can you send over your SOC 2 report?” For a lot of founders, especially first-time ones, that question arrives with no context and a lot of pressure attached to it. This article breaks down what a SOC 2 audit actually is, why it exists, what it takes to get one, and how to think about timing it.
Every founder I know when raising a priced round fixates on one number first. Valuation, It’s the headline, the thing you tell your co-founder over drinks, the number that ends up on TechCrunch if you’re lucky. But valuation is really just the entry point into a much bigger set of decisions like decisions about control, downside protection, and how much of your company you’re actually giving away versus how much you’re just agreeing to share. The founders who negotiate well aren’t the ones who fought hardest for a higher number. They’re the ones who understood what they were negotiating for because they’d taken the time to think like the investor sitting across the table.
