I help organisations solve payroll & WFM pain, simplify global complexity, and build payroll solutions people can trust - Ranked 1 of the Top 50 HR Industry Creators worldwide by Favikon.
I have spent the past 25+ years in payroll and workforce management, and I still believe today it is one of the most misunderstood strategic functions in business. Payroll is often described as transactional. I see it differently. Behind every payslip is a person, a household, a commitment, a business risk, and a moment of trust. Multiply that across countries, currencies, regulations, systems, vendors, and workforces, and payroll quickly becomes one of the clearest measures of how well an organisation really operates. During that time, I have worked on both sides of the customer and solutions provider fence. My experience spans operations, implementation, target operating model design, vendor relationships, advisory, sales, and even marketing. That mix has given me a practical view of what works, what sounds good in a slide deck but fails in real life, and what organisations need to do if they want payroll to move from “back-office necessity” to strategic business capability. I have worked with start-ups, scale-ups, and enterprise organisations across industries including retail, beauty, aerospace, investment banking and technology. I have supported payroll and workforce management for populations of more than 100,000 employees per cycle across 170+ countries, helping organisations navigate growth, compliance, operational complexity, transformation, and change. Today, much of my work focuses on global payroll strategy, compliance, risk, governance, operating model maturity, vendor ecosystems, and the role payroll plays in employee trust and business resilience. I am also a regular speaker, writer, educator, and contributor to the payroll profession. I am actively involved with Payroll Org through education, mentoring, and thought leadership, and serve on the Global Payroll Editorial Advisory Board, the Strategic Payroll Leadership Task Force, and the Government Relations Task Force. I am also a member of the Board of Contributing Writers and the Social Networking Committee. In addition, I serve as an Advisory Board Member for HR.com and hold a Payroll Degree from the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals and the University of Derby. At the heart of it all, I am passionate about helping people understand that payroll is not just about paying people correctly and on time, although let’s be honest, that part still matters rather a lot. Payroll is about trust, compliance, risk, technology, data, culture, and operational excellence. More importantly, it is about people. It's eight billion individual stories, paid one moment at a time.

A little over a week ago... I did a webinar for the National Payroll Institute (NPI) of Canada. To say I'm "chuffed" with a an overall evaluation score of 94% for the session is an understatement. I'm truly grateful it was appreciated. Thank you once again Steven and team once again for the invite.
Part 2 of the Global Payroll’s Biggest Problems series focused on the people and structures that make global payroll work. Guess what? The operating model determines whether the service works. They were, and you can find them here; https://lnkd.in/eA9DNnPK Governance Transformation Payroll payments Talent and knowledge Technology attracts attention 𝗧𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼, payroll depended heavily on experienced local professionals. They knew the legislation, systems, deadlines, exceptions, providers, and workarounds. The knowledge was valuable, but it was rarely documented properly. 𝗧𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼, organisations centralised services and introduced global leadership. They created shared-service teams, governance forums, responsibility matrices, and transformation programmes. But centralising activity did not always centralise capability. Some businesses moved work before transferring knowledge. Others assigned global accountability without providing global authority. 𝗙𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼, the pandemic exposed the weaknesses. Key-person dependencies became business continuity risks, unclear decision rights delayed action, remote working disrupted manual processes, payment models struggled with changing approvals, funding arrangements, and bank cut-off times and transformation programmes accelerated, sometimes faster than organisations could absorb the change. 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆, a strong payroll operating model needs more than defined processes. It needs clear ownership, decision-making authority, documented knowledge, capable people, strong controls, visible payment governance, effective vendor management and continuous improvement Key lessons from these five posts? Payroll is not complete until employees receive their money. Go-live is where the new operating model starts being tested. Shared responsibility must not become diluted accountability. Payroll’s talent shortage is also a succession and knowledge-management problem. Most payroll failures are described as system errors, provider failures, or individual mistakes... Look closer and you often find an operating-model problem! The wrong person owned the decision. The team lacked authority. Knowledge sat with one individual. A control existed on paper but failed in practice. The payment left payroll with no clear owner. The implementation finished, but continuous improvement never started. A payroll operating model should answer four questions clearly... Who owns the outcome? Who has the authority to act? Who knows how the service works? Who confirms the employee was paid? 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂... Can your operating model answer all four? #PayrollLife #GlobalPayroll #GlobalPayrollsBiggestProblems #PayrollOperatingModel
