A couple years ago I was folding Hawaiian Aloha shirts, scrolling LinkedIn, watching people smash it in tech sales and wondering how they got into B2B. Today I'm one of them. I'm Jacob, and my path wasn’t typical: - 2 years in solar sales to pay for college - A stint in marketing (thought it was it) - An adventure exploring dentistry (super interesting, yet the timeline and the debt didn't add up) I didn’t know what I wanted to do. But I knew I loved tech and being competitive. I applied to hundreds of jobs from Seattle to SLC and landed at Verkada. Super grateful they took a chance on me. Verkademy taught me that volume negates luck. It’s the only thing that moves the needle. Seven months in I just earned my promotion to Account Executive. I didn’t get here alone. Huge thanks to Alex Haywood, Quynn Allsup, Jace Root for coaching, and believing in me. To Erika Becker for running a world class program. And to Stephen Richards for taking me on as I step into this next exciting chapter. I took a break from posting here because I was still figuring my career out. But I’ve realized that everyone is doing the exact same thing and it’s still worth sharing. If you’re still just here scrolling, start writing. You never know where it’ll take you.
I’m officially one week into Verkada. My brain is fried. My whiteboard drawings are bad. And I’m more excited than ever. I’m calling this the "Next Google" for a reason. Here is exactly what happened during my first 5 days: Day 1: The Origin Story I finally understood the "job to be done" in this industry. Filip and Hans didn't just build hardware. They leveraged an MVP to change the game. The idea of all your devices on a single piece of glass is so simple, yet powerful. Day 2: Specificity over Fluff I hit the whiteboard (even if I’m bad at drawing fast). The biggest takeaway? A quick pitch isn't just a "brief overview." It has to be super detailed and specific with the numbers. If you can’t draw on past experiences to hit those specific personas, you’re just talking. Day 3: Chuck full of learning The product is just different. AI search paired with a photo is extremely accurate. It proved to me how we have distinct products that are way more advanced than the incumbents. More advancement = more stickiness. Day 4: Connecting the dots Shifted from features to value. The point of selling isn't actually to "sell." It’s to connect the dots of our value to their pain points. Day 5: The "Worst Demo" Rule I gave my first demo. It went real well. But honestly? I want this to be the worst demo I ever give. I’m excited to keep learning how to get better in every single aspect. The Verdict: High-growth tech sales is a mental sport. If you aren't looking for ways to do things differently in hindsight, you're standing still. Next stop: SLC for some in-person time. 🤌🏼 P.S. Which is more important: The "Why" behind the company or the "How" of the product?
Want to stop babysitting your security system? What if you could protect your community with one single view: Sync every campus, station, and department. See your entire footprint on one screen. Protect the front lines. Give your team the tools to manage emergencies immediately, not hours later. Get ahead of the chaos. Use real-time alerts to stop incidents before they escalate. All of this without the usual budget headaches and broken hardware of the past. The Verkada team is at #ISCWest to show how we help schools, police departments, and local governments build truly safe environments. This is for the leaders who need security that actually works when it matters most. Details in the comments! #VerkadaAtISCWest
