It was dumb luck honestly... I was unqualified to even read the job description. But they rolled the dice and took a chance on me and just like that I was running social media at YouVersion (the Bible app with 1 BILLION downloads). At YouVersion I saw how legitimately caring about your audience results in insane follower growth and engagement. We increased the following of our Instagram account from 500,000 to 2.6 million followers in two years. We launched multiple accounts that grew from zero to over 100,000. Our TikTok went from zero to over 300,000 in under six months. I'm currently the Head of Social at Benzinga where I lead the best social media team in the world. So far we've grown our social presence by over 600K followers (50%) and drove 877.74M impressions and 25.97M engagements with a post volume of over 21.7K posts. And we're just getting started. I started writing on LinkedIn on January 1, 2022 and have written (almost) everyday for 4 years. The account has grown from 0 to 45,000+ followers. 15,000 of those followers have been kind enough to subscribe to my newsletter, Social Studies. Social Studies is trusted by social media pros at Walmart, Amazon, Beehiiv, TikTok, Nike, Google, Tesla, Microsoft, DoorDash, Shopify, Adobe, Apple, PayPal, Uber, Salesforce, Target, Disney, Nvidia, Canva, John Deere, Accenture, T-Mobile, Marriott, Dell, and Forbes. Kind words from Ish Verduzco (Founder of Internet Empires, previously at a16z, Snap, and LinkedIn): “There are only a handful of other creators in the social media space who are as sharp and consistent as Jacob has been in recent years. Social Studies is a great addition to your inbox if you work in the social media industry and want to learn from a pro.” In short... I help brands build audiences, engaged communities, and raving fans.

I've run social for a Fortune 500 food company, a Bible app, and a financial media company. Chicken, scripture, and stocks. Not an obvious career path and no clear arc to tie those together. Except for... They've all seen the value in organic social media to drive the business forward. Good social media strategy is an asset to any business and the fundamentals across industries translate more than you'd think.
The hardest part of ghostwriting is the listening. A lot of people can write a decent LinkedIn post, but it gets tricky when trying to: A) Minimize the time from an idea to final product and B) Make that product indistinguishable from the exec's own work. You can get 80% of the way there in the first couple tries, but that last 20% takes so much time and intentional effort to understand things like the phrases they repeat without realizing it and the intricacies of their nuanced opinions. The more I try and support the exec team at Benzinga, the more I realize how much I need to get better at this.
“I just don't have anything to post." I've heard this lie a million times. Every person and every brand has an infinite amount of content waiting to be created. We just need to change our perspective. Here’s what I mean: Content doesn’t have to be perfect. Content doesn’t have to be the Mona Lisa, pristine and perfect behind protective glass at a museum. It’s acceptable if content looks more like an artist’s sketchbook of ideas versus a finished masterpiece. Brands and creators tend to agonize over being “on brand”, but it’s much more important to be “on point” Your audience doesn't care about your brand guidelines. They care about value. They care about authenticity. They care about content that makes their day better. Relatability trumps perfection. A helpful, insightful post will outperform a gorgeous, but empty one. It's also worth noting that content topics don’t have to be unique. Your perspective is unique even if the topic isn’t. Every comedian has a joke about marriage. The content is still original because it’s their own lived experience. “So many people are already talking about XYZ.” So what? They don’t have your background and experience. Content also doesn’t have to be productive. It’s tempting to think that all content needs to have a “immediate positive ROI.” Just because a post doesn’t drive an immediate sale doesn’t mean it’s not effective. If a content drives new followers or builds trust, it’s doing it’s job.
