  • i ran a 10k this weekend. 1 hour and 30 minutes. 6,000th out of 9,500. my first time running with a stroller. here's something i didn't know before saturday. strollers get a 5 minute head start. so for the first mile, i was ahead. way ahead. and then the fast runners caught me. and kept catching me. for the rest of the race, all i saw were people passing me on both sides. slow and steady wins the race has always been my motto, but that morning it stopped being a saying and started being the actual experience. because here's the thing about that head start. it didn't mean i was winning. and them passing me didn't mean i was losing. we were all just running our own race at our own pace, some people get a head start. some people are faster. some of us are pushing something extra that nobody else at the starting line has to carry. you take your detours. you take the hills at your speed. and you still cross the same finish line. it just takes the time it takes. 1 hour and 30 minutes. 6,000th place. right on time, for me. where are you in your race right now?

  • working from home by yourself and working from home with a kid are two completely different jobs. i did the first one for six years. i thought that made me qualified for the second one. it did not. same desk, same hours, entirely different sport. after months of trying to power through it, i finally sat down and treated it like what it actually is. not a schedule problem. a systems problem. here are the 5 systems i'm running now: - letting ai handle inbox triage. now something else sorts my inbox and I've build me a dashboard. i start the day already knowing what needs me. - batching content instead of creating in the cracks. twenty minutes here and there doesn't work anymore. now it's one block, one setup, multiple pieces, done. - protecting an early window that isn't for work. before anyone's up, before the first message lands. i'm not using it to get ahead. it's mine, and that's the point. - automating the small recurring things. a subscription for diapers and wipes sounds trivial. it isn't. the invisible list is the heaviest thing a working parent carries. -deciding in advance instead of in the moment. what i'm wearing, what we're eating, what i'm posting. decision fatigue is a resourcing issue and it hits hardest at 4pm. none of this is revolutionary. all of it is stuff i should have built six months ago instead of assuming i could just work harder around it. if you're running a career and a small human from the same desk, i want to hear what's actually working for you. i'm taking notes.

  • i wake up two hours before anyone in my house needs me. work from home has no edges. the day starts the second you open your eyes if you let it. so the routine is small. up early, no phone for a bit, make tea, sit with it. as boring as it sounds, the tea is the part that actually changed something. somewhere in a busy day, tea makes me stop. coffee just makes me keep going. i never thought of it that way until recently. i'd been drinking coffee at my desk for years and calling that a break. it wasn't. it was just fuel for more of the same. the tea takes a few minutes to make and a few more to drink and i can't really rush either part. that's the whole trick. it's not the drink, it's the pause built into it. and the pause is where the thinking happens. the better version of the deck. the thing i should have said in the meeting. if your entire morning is reactive, your entire day will be too. find the one thing that makes you sit still before the messages start. it doesn't have to be tea. it just has to be non negotiable. what's yours, and do you actually still do it?
