The Internal Comms Gal. Education & community for internal comms pros. [email removed]
I'm the CEO of The Curious Route, an internal communications consultancy practice based in Dublin, Ireland. I help organisations communicate better with their employees. I offer training, consulting, speaking and workshops. I'm the author of "Innovative Internal Communication", published by Kogan Page in August 2024. I support internal communication professionals directly through my membership community, The Curious Tribe. My curiosity-first approach emphasises listening, questioning and observing to identify challenges, understand problems and come up with creative solutions. I sat on the Board of Directors with the Institute of Internal Communication (IoIC) for 3 years. In 2022, I was awarded an IoIC Fellowship, in recognition that I am one of the leading experts in internal communication across the UK & Ireland. I’ve appeared on lots of popular podcasts, including The Internal Comms Podcast, A View from the Top, The Engaging Internal Comms Podcast and Digital Rebels. I’ve been a keynote speaker at the Public Sector Digital Marketing Summit. I've won multiple awards for my work in internal communications over the last 12 years, including: - Finalist for “Leader of the Year” in the 2023 Gartner Marketing & Communications Awards - Finalist for "Internal Communicator of the Year" in the Internal Communications & Engagement Awards 2023 - Winner for “Best Internal Communication” - Public Relations Institute of Ireland Awards 2021 - Winner for “Most Effective Essential Worker Communications” - Covid Comms Awards 2021 - Silver for "Best Internal Communications During COVID-19" - Internal Communications & Engagement Awards 2020 - Award of Excellence for “Best Crisis Communications” - Institute of Internal Communication Awards 2020

Hot take incoming... Communication can't compensate for unpopular leadership decisions. The CEO wants everyone back in the office 5 days a week and employees hate it? No, internal comms can't fix that with a campaign. No bonuses this year because leaders want to tighten the belt? No, internal comms can't raise morale with a video series. Employees are pissed off, Janet! Let them feel their feelings. We aren't magicians, but yes we can help. What the comms team CAN do is: ➡️ Communicate the decision clearly and honestly ➡️ Help people understand the reasons behind it ➡️ Show people what it means for them ➡️ Explain what they need to do as a result Employees may hate a leadership decision but they don't need to hate how it's communicated.

A Head of Internal Comms in the Netherlands sent me this question: "I run our quarterly townhalls and something I want to improve is how I help leaders show up better and connect with employees better. I put a lot of work into scripts and writing key messages for each speaker, but this approach isn't really working. They often ignore what I've written and go off on pointless tangents. I'd like to think differently about my role in helping leaders prepare for townhalls, what do you suggest?" Ah jaysus. A tale as old as time! I remember once spending an entire day crafting thoughtful, audience-centric key messages for a leader ahead of a townhall. I even printed them out, knowing that leader preferred old school print rather than digital. Did I find those notes crumpled in the bin before the event? Yes. Yes I did. And I think we all have some version of this story, where we've tried to help our leaders get ready but our approach wasn't quite working. We are working hard but not getting anywhere. What can we do to best prepare our leaders for a townhall? How can we help them show up, communicate clearly, get their key points across without going over time or wandering off on a tangent? In tomorrow's email newsletter I'll talk about how you can prep your leaders for townhalls. I'll cover: ➡️ How to swap key messages for key questions ➡️ How to get the townhall agenda agreed without chasing anyone for approval ➡️ How to coach a leader on their delivery without relying solely on your own opinion If you spend hours getting leaders ready for a townhall and it still doesn't land the way you hoped, this edition is for you. 👉 Sign up to get it in your inbox tomorrow: https://lnkd.in/ez3_eq4c
