For a long time, the fear around AI was simple: engineers would become unnecessary. That's not what's actually happening. What's changing is the shape of the job. Here's what a typical build looks like for me now: 1. I define the goal. This is still the hardest and most important part. AI cannot read your mind, and it cannot fix a badly defined problem. Clarity here saves hours later. 2. AI agents write, test, and debug. Once the goal is clear, the agents handle the heavy lifting, generating code, running tests, catching bugs, iterating fast. 3. I review, validate, and ship. Nothing goes live without a human checking it makes sense, actually solves the problem, and holds up under real conditions. The engineer's job isn't disappearing. It's evolving from writing every line by hand to directing systems that can write, test, and improve code at a pace no individual could match alone. If you're still measuring your value as an engineer by how much code you personally type, it might be time to rethink that.
