Helping software engineers become better software engineers by building projects. With or without AI.
I’ve built and scaled high-performing teams of software engineers, shaped engineering culture, and driven technical strategy in VC-backed startups and multi-billion-dollar enterprises. I’m known for taking on underperforming teams and turning them into confident, capable, and effective engineering organisations. I combine deep technical expertise with a pragmatic, commercially driven approach to leadership. My MBA, along with experience as a founder and startup executive, enables me to align technology strategy with business objectives and deliver measurable commercial outcomes. A servant leader at heart, I focus on mentoring, coaching, and enabling teams to deliver software that drives growth and business success. I bring: - 25+ years of software engineering experience across a range of technology stacks. - 20+ years of software engineering leadership experience from Engineering Manager to VP Engineering/CTO. - 10+ years of shipping AI based products (across Evolutionary Algorithms, Constraint Propagation, Search and Optimisation, Neural Networks and LLMs). - 5+ years of experience representing software engineering at board level. - 3+ years of leveraging LLMs for software engineering.

When a "CTO" posts this, you know they're a junior engineer with title inflation or a PHB straight out of Dilbert. More code does not equal more value.
Apparently there are engineers I respect that don't know about PHBs. So as a public service, if that's you, enjoy the cartoon below and if you do, check out Dilbert. It's a satirical look at working in an office with tech. A PHB is a Pointy Haired Boss. And if you're a fan, which is your favour strip?
Here's the reality of building a macOS app with AI, and why we don't see 10x productivity gains or everyone building their own apps. I built the core functionality with Kiro, that took a few hours. Without Kiro it would have been a few weeks. I tested the core functionality and dogfooded the app for a few days, made some changes and refinements. I decided to release the app, shipping a real app, built with AI. To do that properly, I need to sign it. To do that I need an Apple developer id. To do that, I need a DUNS number for my business. Bureaucracy. Got it, applied for the developer id, got turned down as the businesses doesn't have a website. So now I need a website for the business. Then I have to re-apply. None of it is hard, but it's time consuming and I'd rather be building the app than a website, just to tick a box.
