Founder, SideDoor News | Career navigation for people with no head start | Practical AI for your 9-5, no tech background needed
I was a generalist before it had a better name. At AB InBev, I moved through analytics, consumer insights, strategy, and agile transformation. On paper it looked unfocused. Today that same path has hot job titles: operator, founder's associate, chief of staff. Back then it was "jack of all trades," and nobody meant it as a compliment. I think the people who can do a bit of everything are about to become the most valuable people in the room. AI is getting very good at deep, narrow work. Connecting the pieces, switching contexts, knowing which problem matters — that's the job that's left. I'm betting my career on it. I didn't get a playbook. Non-target school, first-gen, no network waiting for me at graduation. Every move was figured out the hard way, which is why I create content about career navigation for people starting from the same place. The live proof, built nights and weekends alongside my 9-5: → Side Door News — my career newsletter for people building without the standard playbook. Real stories of how people actually got in, because the best opportunities rarely come through the front door. SideDoorsNews.com → The Civic Pulse — a "Government, explained. No spin." media brand. Promise tracker, newsletter, daily and weekly emails, all built solo. → Career Generalist — a resource hub of jobs, tools, and courses for generalist careers. What I write about here and on Instagram/TikTok (@itsmichaelinnamorato): Career navigation when nobody handed you the map What building two media brands alongside a day job actually teaches you Why generalists win the AI age The AI tools I use every day, and how I use them Personal branding when you don't have a fancy title Real, honest, unfiltered advice For brands and marketing teams: I take on creator partnerships for products I actually use — career development, productivity, and AI tools. My audience is early-to-mid career professionals navigating non-linear paths. Email me, and I'll send details. NYC native. Off hours, I'm at a dog park somewhere in the five boroughs. The most valuable career skill I have is resiliency. It only cost me everything. Nobody teaches you that the tuition for real judgment is paid in mistakes, including the ones that weren't yours. Some people spend an entire career at one company, promoted every 2-3 years. If you've found that, hold on for dear life until your growth or your learning stalls out. The rest of us get a different curriculum: layoffs, terminations, "AI-driven headcount reductions," budgets that disappear with your name inside them, or no growth. I'd never put it on a resume, but getting laid off cracked my career open. It pushed me into industries I wouldn't have picked and paths I didn't know existed. It's also the reason I can be dropped into almost any room, get up to speed fast, and start contributing immediately — I've had to, more than once. The stuff that makes you good is rarely the stuff that makes you look good. What did your most expensive lesson cost?
I used to think a career was a ladder. Mine turned out to be a fire escape - sideways, up, back down a level, in through a window, laid off, wallow in self-pity - do something about it. CPG Analytics, consumer insights, strategy, agile, PM, and now the creator economy/Solopreneuring on top of a 9-5. On paper it looks like indecision. In practice, every sideways move taught me something the straight-line people never got: how to be dropped anywhere and figure it out. The ladder isn't coming back. The people who'll be fine are the ones who embrace it What's the "off-track" move that taught you the most?
You applied to 200 jobs and heard nothing back. You're not broken. The front door is. Nobody tells you this, so I will: the $500 resume rewrite won't fix it. The "optimize your keywords" course won't fix it. The premium job board won't fix it. People are selling you keys to a door that's locked from the inside. What actually moves: a human referring you. A comment thread that turns into a coffee. A side project someone can click on. The side door has always been how people with connections get in; it's just never been the thing anyone could sell you. Stop paying for the front door. What's the side door that actually got you hired? Tell me below — someone in the comments needs it today.
