25 years ago today, on 9/11, I was an elementary school child feeling scared and being evacuated from my 1st grade classroom in single file. I was just 6 years old in the suburbs of NYC, a true commuter town. VERY shortly after the first plane hit at 8:46am, our classroom went into a "lockdown" whatever that meant, and the principal's voice echoed through each room on the loud speaker that something really really bad had happened and we had to go home to safety. My friends and schoolmates lost parents that morning - many of whom worked in the World Trade Center. My own mother worked in the city, but I was too young to know where her office was - I was scared. We were children. We did not understand that the fabric of our lives, our community, our family members were forever changed. For days and days, I could see the dark bellows of smoke coming from ground zero from my backyard - 26.8 miles away. My parents worked tirelessly to protect me from the violent imagery and news stories - something I am profoundly grateful for. Over the last 25 years, as I entered adulthood, the stories of 9/11 from my community would continue to unravel... thankfully, the worst stories only reached my ears once I had the adult capacity to process them. I did not know that for the rest of my life, people around the world would ask me about my experience that day - eager to share their own memories from abroad and to ask if I knew anyone who died. A few years ago, I finally made the trip to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum to spend 5 hours reading and listening to everything. It is, and continues to be, one of the most beautifully curated museums I've ever been to. The stories I read and listened to from others, the left-behind objects and loved ones- it all mirrored the stories of hope, pain, miracles, and humanity that had echoed through my community. It is both tragic and beautiful. This morning, I woke up feeling such profound sadness. I hugged my mother so deeply as she told me how heavy the day felt - of her most striking memories of trying to flee from Grand Central, fearing another attack. Hug your loved ones today. Ask them how they are doing. Make a silent prayer or send well wishes to those still grieving. Thank your local firefighters. Stare at the sky today and try to imagine that beautiful, vibrant blue sky that was so memorable on such a tragic day. This photo is of me at age 6 with my best friend, just 3 months after 9/11. All of our parents survived that day. My au pair who snapped the photo, had a friend who was missing for a few days - she had an internship in one of the towers. She was thankfully evacuated by boat and housed in New Jersey by kind strangers until she could return home safely. #NeverForget #September11
