You can rank #1 on Google and still have weak visibility inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Perplexity. Because ranking ≠ being recommended. The future of search isn't about choosing between SEO and LLM optimization. It's about building content that can rank, be understood, be retrieved, and be cited. That means: Traditional SEO + LLM-friendly content + strong brand/entity signals. Google Search primarily evaluates pages based on signals like: → Relevance → Content quality → Backlinks → Technical SEO → Search intent → Freshness → User experience LLM Search adds another layer: → Entity clarity → Topical depth → Credibility & trust → Original insights → Clear, extractable information → Strong brand associations → Evidence that can be cited The brands that start optimizing for both search environments now will have a serious advantage as user behavior shifts from “search and click” → “ask and trust.” ♻️ Save + Share this framework if you're working on SEO, AEO, or GEO. - - - - - - - 📌 P.S. If your brand is visible on Google but barely shows up in ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity, there’s a gap in your search strategy. DM me “LLM SEO” and let’s identify what’s missing. - Ume Laila
One thing that gets missed when people talk about AI visibility I keep seeing “AI mentions” and “AI citations” used as if they mean the same thing. They don't. And that sounds like a small terminology issue until you start measuring LLM visibility. Because a brand can be: Mentioned but not cited. Cited but not mentioned. Both mentioned and cited. Or neither. And then there’s another layer people often skip… Was the brand actually recommended? If 10 competitors are cited in an answer, that doesn't mean all 10 are equally visible. One might be the source. Another might be mentioned. Another might be the one the AI actually recommends. A citation is not automatically a brand win. Semrush analyzed 3,981 domain appearances across 115 prompts, 14 countries, and four AI search experiences and found that 61.7% of citations were “ghost citations”. The source was cited, but the brand itself wasn't mentioned in the answer. A page can be doing its job as a source without doing much for brand recall. And the reverse can happen too: a brand can be mentioned without a source being attached. The platform matters as well. In that same Semrush study, ChatGPT cited domains 87% of the time but mentioned the brand only 20.7% of the time. While Gemini showed almost the opposite pattern: 83.7% mention rate vs. 21.4% citation rate. So there isn't one universal “AI visibility” metric. You need to know what happened, where it happened, and in what context. That is where LLM visibility becomes something you can actually strategize around, not just another vanity metric. P.S. Google itself says there are no special “AI SEO” requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode; the foundational SEO practices still apply. The opportunity is understanding what happens after those fundamentals put your information into the ecosystem. - Ume Laila
