Community is grown, not launched. | Community for AI startups | Formerly Community Manager at Lovable, co-founder of SheBuilds
I trained as a counselor. Now I build communities. They're closer to the same job than they sound. Both come down to one question: what makes a person feel they belong somewhere, and what makes that feeling durable enough to survive a bad day. At Lovable, that question had a very concrete form. Initially, their Discord wasn't a community as much as it was a support channel they had, and most of the 55,302 people in it had arrived because something was broken. They came in with a problem and left once it was solved. My job was to make it a place people came back to when nothing was wrong. Three things did most of that work: 1. Recurring programming, so there was a reason to show up on an ordinary day. I started a live event called Open Door with no agenda, expecting an hour of complaints, and got a real conversation instead, so it became a twice-weekly fixture. 2. A member-carried culture layer, because culture that staff enforce is fragile and culture that members carry holds. 3. A feedback loop members could watch working, since the difference between a community and a suggestion box is whether anyone ever sees their input land. By the time I left, the server had passed 172,000 members. The volunteer Champions program had gone from 50 disengaged people to a working core of 21 across 9 countries. SheBuilds, the hackathon program I co-founded with Elena Verna, had drawn 7,500+ applications from 120+ countries. I also build. A Champion and I made a Discord bot that runs sentiment analysis and retention tracking and feeds a monthly community health report. I've built tools on the OpenRouter API, shipped code to a production site through pull requests, and spent a year translating between complete beginners and CTOs in the same room. Underneath all of it I'm here to help other people shine, in whatever way matters most to them. That's the through line from counseling to systems work to community. Right now I'm working with AI at Work, a grassroots AI community in Pittsburgh, and talking with AI startups about what comes next. If your community has turned into a help desk, or hasn't turned into anything yet, I'm glad to talk.

I have zero security background. Last week, I spent an evening trying to break an AI model anyway. Gray Swan first caught my attention in May, when the Pittsburgh startup closed a $40 million Series A. Last week, I finally had the chance to check out their Arena: a community of 15,000+ red teamers who stress-test AI models for the world's top frontier labs. I figured that world was closed to anyone without direct security experience. Turns out it wasn't. I joined their Discord and found a community that holds a genuinely high bar while still making room for beginners like me. I got through two of the onboarding challenges, then moved on to the live competition and got stumped. But not stumped in a way that made me want to walk away. I was stumped in a way that had me wanting to figure it out. The biggest realization? Understanding how AI can be misused is becoming basic digital literacy, not a concept only a niche needs to understand and think about. We don't all need to be experts, but we all have a stake in this getting done well. I wrote up the full experience, including what I'd tell anyone thinking about trying it - and you SHOULD try it, trust me: https://lnkd.in/gWUj2mAj Check out Gray Swan's Arena: https://lnkd.in/guF-82F6 Join their Discord: https://lnkd.in/gdZ22Ykt Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get back to it.
Just posted in Open Door in Lovable's online community on Discord. So good I had to immediately share. Cat Varnell for the win. Join us: https://lnkd.in/ebr_MSPz Every Tuesday and Thursday at 1pm ET
Having been fully immersed in the online Lovable community for the past year, it was easy for me to miss out on the incredible AI community right here in Pittsburgh. Thankfully, that changed last May when I was able to attend my first AI at Work event. I was blown away by the energy and people. Last week I had that same wonderful experience at the latest AI@Work event, Chapter 10. Watching Spencer Whitman walk us through a Claude co-work task he uses triggered a lightbulb moment for me and a co-work automation I could set up for something I’m working on. Listening to Jon Zeolla present I have to admit, it was over my head. But it was clear to me how much others were benefitting from what he shared and that was just as great to experience. Big thank you to Chad Isaiah for always being an incredible friend and jumping in to capture the evening with his incredible photography skills. Honored to be part of this community and excited for what lays ahead!
