About Abby Murray

An effective brand is personal. Cofounder + [email removed] B2B brands build trust and drive pipeline through content.

Most B2B companies are sitting on a goldmine of expertise and publishing none of it. I built storyarb to fix that. We turn SME knowledge into content programs that build trust and drive real pipeline for high-growth B2B companies — running the full flywheel from SME interviews to long-form strategy, newsletters, and social for marketing leaders who are done producing content that doesn't convert. Before storyarb, I co-founded Mortarr in 2017, a B2B search and discovery platform connecting the commercial construction and design world online. We grew to 1,500+ companies showcasing their work to tens of thousands of MAUs before its acquisition by Ecomedes in early 2022, where I stayed on as CMO through the integration. Prior to that, I co-founded Brick (fka The Marketing Plant), a B2B branding and marketing agency that served as agent of record for multiple firms and supported over $100MM in successful acquisitions for our clients. Brick was also the birthplace of Mortarr. I'm a 4x founder, ASU marketing grad, and have been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Thrive Global, and a handful of places that make my mom proud. If any of this is relevant to what you're building, I'd love to connect!

  • I’ve co-founded four companies. Two bootstrapped. Two funded. So four of my top mistakes that have cost me the most: #1 Not having my own attorney protect my interests. When we took on investors, I didn’t have personal counsel looking out for my founder shares. I took a massive blow as the OG founder and CEO. One I still have a hard time talking about. I could point fingers until the cows come home. Ultimately, it was my responsibility to understand what I was signing and have someone smarter than me protecting my stake in the game. #2 Not trusting my gut. This part is still so so hard. You want to seek wise council, not be naive or think you're always the smartest person in the room. So as a founder, you're constantly taking in advice. But deciphering what to take and what to leave is incredibly difficult discernment. And every time I’ve talked myself out of what my instincts were telling me, I’ve eventually paid for it. Usually in time, energy, team morale, and money. #3 Believing the lower-salaried B-player was the more affordable hire. THEY ARE ALMOST ALWAYS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE HIGHER-SALARIED A PLAYER. THEY ARE ALMOST ALWAYS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE HIGHER-SALARIED A PLAYER. THEY ARE ALMOST ALWAYS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE HIGHER-SALARIED A PLAYER. Yes, this is me yelling. (And repeating for my own thick skull.) The salary may be lower. The cost of missed opportunities, extra management, slower execution, and eventual replacement rarely is. #4 Placing blind trust in smart people. Intelligence and good intentions don’t eliminate the need for accountability. Especially when money is involved. Trust and verify. Always. **BONUS: Not making time for friends. I'm working really hard on this one. ✌ -- These lessons were expensive. Some cost me money. Some cost me time. Some cost me ownership. All cost me a few nights of sleep. I wouldn’t recommend learning any of them the hard way, so take copious notes.

  • OKOKOK WE HEAR YOU!! WE'RE DOING IT! We've just opened up a just a few select spots to Crowd Work's LIVE NYC comedy special!!! A little backstory: If you know anything about me, you know how sus I am on conferences (and swag). And "marketing events." 🥱 But we just had to do a proper launch of our Sunday funnies edition of The Standard. And we just had to see some of y'all IRL. We considered a couple CMO Dinners. And sure, they're cute and all. But that's not exactly aligned with our mission to breathe life back into B2B marketing. To leave folks smiling after every interaction with us. With our content. Our clients' content. Or an event we host. Then our resident comedian Sarah Suzuki Harvard said, "Hey wait! What about a comedy show?!" Yes. That's it. A B2B marketing event with no slideshows, no small talk, no weird swag, absolutely NO lanyards. And you're allowed to laugh at the speakers. (killer lineup btw) Brought to you by storyarb in partnership with our friends at Air + beehiiv Link to register for our last batch of seats below! • I’ve received 8,432 emails already this morning claiming some expert can help me with an AI visibility audit. Cool. You and 8,431 others. All offering exactly 50% of what I actually need: → Here's how often your brand shows up. → Here's where competitors are showing up. → Here's which pages AI systems are citing. → Here's your visibility score. → Maybe do some auto-refreshes The other 50% is what to actually DO with this data? → What topics your brand should own. → How those topics are trending (and does this even matter). → Who are the experts that can help inform original thought around it. → How does this strategy align with your content calendar. → Where should all of this be published. Drove me bonkers enough that I decided we better roll out our own thing. Actually help y’all marketers get the AEO job done. 100% of the way. Check out Foreshadow. Where we’ll take your AI visibility data, and actually tell you what to do with it to win this next era of search relevancy. 30 day sprint. Then take and run with it using your own team, or hire us to execute the strategy for you. https://lnkd.in/e6WBqpXn
