Your SQL window functions might be correct… until a user applies a filter. A RANK() calculated in SQL is fixed at query time. When Tableau filters the view afterward, the ranking can develop gaps and stop reflecting what the user actually sees. The fix: when the metric depends on the current view, calculate it in Tableau. Table calculations recompute after filters are applied, so ranks, Top N, running totals, percentages of total, and moving averages stay aligned with the user’s context. Rule of thumb: if users control the context, compute the answer where they see it. How do you decide whether logic belongs in SQL or Tableau? #sql #dataanalytics #data #Tableau
“We’ll clean it up later” has an interest rate. An undocumented field means someone has to rediscover its meaning. A mysterious calculation turns every change into an investigation. A temporary workaround becomes a dependency nobody wants to touch. Then another report gets built on top. And another pipeline. The shortcut keeps charging the team in rework, confusion, and slower delivery. Document the meaning. Explain the logic. Give temporary fixes a plan for replacement. Today’s shortcut can become everyone else’s maintenance.
Halfway through the financial year. I’m chasing the OKRs. The financial year is chasing me. Leadership. 😂 Still, the job is simple: keep the team focused, remove blockers, and keep moving the work that matters. Plenty done. Plenty left.
