  • Was Bob Cene the original architect of the modern "Live-Work-Play" model? I recently saw someone post: "Local and state governments need to start treating factories like they treat stadiums." It hit home, and I immediately thought of the late Bob Cene. A lot of people talk about the "Live-Work-Play" model as a modern corporate strategy, but Bob was proving how to do it decades ago right here in the Mahoning Valley. He didn't just build a company that still stands as a pillar of our local economy, he built an ecosystem that benefited his workers. He literally put baseball fields next to the factory so folks can watch their kids and community play ball. He understood that you don’t just attract and retain top-tier talent by handing out a paycheck; you do it by investing in the quality of life for the worker and their family. Cene Park is still one of the premier baseball facilities in Ohio. It serves as a physical, daily reminder that industry isn't just about output or quarterly margins, it’s about the infrastructure we provide for the people who actually do the work. With the current US manufacturing renaissance we are seeing, we have a massive opportunity to follow that blueprint. If Youngstown wants to win the next generation of industrial talent, we need to stop thinking of manufacturing as a silo and start thinking of it as an ecosystem. Manufacturing has changed over the years and robotics / autonomy will be at the forefront. Let's build in Youngstown.
