About Tabarak Rehman

Distressed Credit | AlixPartners

In December 2024, I became the first person ever to run 1,000 miles (1,600 km) across Pakistan—completing an ultra-marathon every day for 35 days. This journey helped raise over $750K for The Citizens Foundation, to help them educate 5,000+ out-of-school children. I currently work in the Turnaround & Restructuring Practice at AlixPartners, where I analyze distressed companies to identify business opportunities and craft solutions. Previously, I was an Equity Research Analyst at Vitality Capital, covering consumer discretionary sectors (Automobiles & U.S. Apparel Retail). CFA charterholder. Master’s in Business Analytics from Northeastern University. Views are my own.

  • Random AI bro who's never worked in finance: AI is going to kill every job in finance. What's actually happening: Analysts using AI tools like Perplexity become unreasonably productive. As a distressed credit analyst, AI has stretched my work in two directions at once. I go deeper on the companies I care about, and I cover a lot more names than I used to, without adding hours. Pre-AI, my research process was: Run a screen --> If a name is interesting, dig in --> If it's not, throw it on a "monitor" list. That monitor list very easily becomes a graveyard. You must make an active effort to go back to it. My starting point hasn't changed: screen --> read the latest 10-K/10-Q --> understand the business and the story the market is telling. I've just complimented my process now with a KPI tracker I built using Perplexity. Perplexity auto-updates the tracker every quarter, and whenever there is any material news. Every morning, I get a curated newsletter across all of the names on my watchlist, flagging anything that moves the story. My tracker has: 1. Historical beat/miss and stock reaction, by quarter 2. Sell-side analyst sentiment: a heatmap of what analysts pressed on each quarter, plus narrative cards with bear/bull framing and key debate call-outs 3. Guidance history tracker (updates & actuals) 4. KPI trends that update automatically Perplexity pulls from SEC filings, FactSet, Morningstar, and live earnings call transcripts. I don't really need any extra plugins or expensive data subscriptions. This means I can spend more time on the part of the job I actually enjoy. AI isn't replacing equity / credit analysts. It's making good analysts dramatically more productive. Example screenshot from the Adobe tracker I built for my personal portfolio. Stock's down 60% over 5 years. Up 25% off the bottom. Still down 30% YTD. https://lnkd.in/du68hU8u

  • I recently sat down with an immigrant business owner who has two restaurants and a wholesale business in New York, doing around $5mm a year. Moved to NYC 14 years ago, started as a taxi driver, built his life from zero. I asked him the best business lesson he'd learned. He said: There are two types of people who steal from your business. 1) Bad employees. They steal money, inventory, or time. That's a good problem to solve because now you improve your hiring, build better systems, and let the wrong people go. 2) You stealing from yourself. By not being fully present, avoiding hard decisions, putting off difficult conversations. Ignoring the systems you expect everyone else to follow. Bad employees can hurt a business. Distracted owners almost always kills the business. That holds true for whatever we do in our careers & personal lives.
