An experienced NED told me this week that because of AI, all the board packs she gets now are too perfect and too polished. She used to read the papers, understand the business, and give advice. Now, she has to assume that the text has been scrubbed clean of any tension. Which means she has to stay much closer to the ground and ask, "Does management's narrative really reflect reality?" It reminded me of my theory of "Socrates as a service." When AI makes it super easy to produce squeaky-clean messages and presentations, asking good questions that go deeper is a superpower. So if you're building a business, make sure you've got some good question-askers — some good Socrates — around you.
It seems like every panel about AI and creativity ends with polite agreement that AI is just another tool/keep humans in the loop, blah blah. We're skipping the panel format entirely. On October 29th, Alys Key and I are co-hosting an Oxford-style debate with the Founder-Writer Collective at Granola's London office (dream collab). The motion: This house believes AI is making us less creative. Having just moderated a similar debate in Barcelona last week, I see how much value there is in forcing ourselves to take sides and lay out the arguments. Our speakers are experts in the topic, having done deep research, writing, and even building companies in this space: Bruno Marnette, Archie Hall, Paloma Ruiz Díaz de Rivera, and Marzia Niccolai. The winner is the one that shifts the most votes, so come ready to have your mind changed. https://luma.com/rek0kyyz
The education office in Incheon, South Korea, spent $3m building a municipal metaverse during the metaverse hype days. A journalist logged in last year and found precisely...0 other people. Cue the below image, which perfectly captures the existential dread of realizing that your tax dollars have been squandered on a deserted digital wasteland. (But I guess the cherry blossoms are kinda nice?) I keep thinking about this screenshot as companies pour lots of money into making skills and agents and blah blah. Will anyone be using them in a year? In six months? I foresee lots of tumbleweeds.
