You don’t need a following to get started with UGC. Not 100,000 followers. Not 10,000. Not even 1,000. You don’t need a following at all. That’s one of the biggest reasons I think job seekers should look into user-generated content, or UGC. UGC is content that brands pay creators to make for their own marketing. Think: * Product videos * Short-form videos * Testimonials * Product demonstrations * Voiceovers * Photos and lifestyle content The brand doesn’t necessarily need you to post the content to your own audience. They need you to create the content. That’s a huge difference. I actually got into UGC through a CareerHound brand ambassador opportunity. I was already creating content about remote jobs and helping people find companies hiring remotely. That opportunity showed me that content creation could become more than something I did for fun. It could become a paid skill. And that’s why I encourage job seekers to explore UGC. You can start it as a: Side hustle while you’re searching for work. Portfolio builder when you don’t have much experience. New skill that can strengthen your resume. Path into marketing, social media, or creator work. And you don’t need fancy equipment. You don’t need a huge audience. You don’t even need to call yourself an influencer. You just need to learn how to create content that helps a brand sell, teach, or connect with customers. Start with one video. Then another. Build a small portfolio. Reach out to brands. See where it takes you. Your next career opportunity doesn’t always have to come from a job application. Sometimes, you can create the opportunity yourself. If you’re looking for remote work while building new income streams, check out CareerHound.io. It’s a paid resource that helps you discover remote-friendly companies and jobs beyond the usual job boards. Check out CareerHound.io and see what’s out there. And if you want to learn more about getting started with UGC, comment “UGC” below.
I’m going to explain UGC like you’re five years old. UGC means a brand pays you to make content for them. You don’t need 100,000 followers. You don’t need 10,000. You don’t even need a following at all. A few months ago, I started exploring UGC as a way to help my neurodivergent clients find new ways to earn money and build skills. I quickly realized something. UGC isn’t just for influencers. It can be a real career path. You can start by making simple videos for brands. Product demos. Testimonials. Unboxing videos. How-to videos. Voiceovers. Short social media videos. You can build a portfolio without waiting for an employer to give you your first chance. And that’s what makes UGC so interesting for job seekers. You’re not just saying, “I know how to create content.” You’re showing it. Over time, those projects can help you build skills in: Content creation. Video editing. Marketing. Copywriting. Social media. Personal branding. And client communication. You can start UGC as a side hustle while you’re job hunting. For some people, it could eventually become full-time work. That’s exactly what happened with me. I started UGC to help job seekers. Now I’m creating content to promote CareerHound, a niche job board designed to help people discover better remote opportunities and more meaningful work. And it all started with one simple idea: Maybe we shouldn’t only teach people how to apply for jobs. Maybe we should also help them create new ways to earn. So if you’re struggling to find work, don’t limit yourself to submitting more resumes. Look at the skills you already have. Then ask yourself: “What could someone actually pay me to create?” That question can lead you somewhere unexpected. And if you’re curious about getting into UGC, contact me. I’m happy to talk with you about what getting started could look like and whether UGC might be a good fit for you. You don’t need a huge following. You don’t need to be an influencer. You just need to be willing to create.
I’m excited to share that I just started working with a new client, Jason Sardo! Jason is actively looking for his next role, and I’d love your help getting him in front of the right people. The short version: a career in sales and strategy, mostly in early-stage and regulated markets, usually as the first or only seller in the building. Before that, federal service and national security program management. What he’s actually good at: walking into an undefined market, figuring out who buys and why, and building the motion that gets it sold. Ambiguity isn’t a problem for him — it’s the fun part. What he’s looking for: -Enterprise or public sector Account Executive roles -Chief of Staff or Head of Strategy at a growth-stage company -Open to relocating / fully remote If your team is hiring — or you know one that is — I’d love an intro. And if you’ve got ten seconds, a comment or repost goes a long way in getting this in front of people neither of us knows yet. Thanks!
