Back to app development after almost a year!
AI is making senior engineers write less code. And honestly, I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. There’s a growing conversation around how senior engineers are becoming “lazy” because they use AI to write code. I see it differently. As engineers become more senior, their responsibility shouldn’t be measured by how many lines of code they write. A senior engineer should spend more time thinking about: → Architecture → System design → Code quality → Trade-offs → Performance and scalability → Product decisions → Reviewing and mentoring → Solving the problems that actually matter If AI can take care of repetitive implementation work, why shouldn’t we use it? The real danger isn’t writing less code. The danger is understanding less code. A senior engineer should still be capable of writing the code, debugging it, challenging AI-generated solutions, and knowing when the solution is wrong. AI should be a productivity tool—not a replacement for engineering judgment. Maybe the role of a senior engineer is simply evolving from “the person who writes the code” to “the person who makes sure the right code gets written.” And I think that’s a good evolution.
I just started using Command Code with the $1 Go plan, and honestly, I’m impressed. I’ve been using LongCat-2.0, which is available for free and supports agentic coding with a 1M-token context. In just the last 8 hours, I’ve used almost 22M tokens. It’s interesting to see how much coding work you can now do with these AI tools without spending a lot of money. AI coding is moving really fast.
