About Taka Sande

I am a Certified Director® and governance advisor with a career rooted in strengthening board effectiveness, ethical leadership, and institutional stability in complex, high-risk environments. My leadership journey spans boardrooms, audit committees, executive management, and national public-finance oversight, giving me a practical understanding of how governance decisions translate into financial, operational, and reputational outcomes. Over the past two decades, I have worked across capital-intensive infrastructure, property development, municipalities, professional bodies, and private enterprises, advising and governing organisations responsible for multi-billion-rand portfolios and public-interest mandates. My work has included financial recovery initiatives, audit and risk oversight, turnaround support, and governance reform, often in environments under regulatory pressure, fiscal stress, or public scrutiny. My Unique Leadership Experience lies in bridging governance intent with execution reality. Boards rely on me where weak controls, ethical erosion, financial distress, or delivery failure threaten sustainability. I bring the ability to ask the right questions under pressure, strengthen audit, risk, and ethics oversight, and guide boards toward defensible, long-term decisions—not theoretical compliance. I am also a governance author, educator, and speaker. I have published Roadmap to Non-Executive Directorship – The Essential Handbook, and am currently writing Governance of Corruption – A Guide for Directors. Through board training, speaking, and advisory work across Africa and internationally, I focus on helping directors lead with clarity, independence, and ethical courage when the stakes are highest.

  • Your first 100 days in leadership are not about proving that you have all the answers. They are about asking the right questions, understanding the organisation, earning trust and establishing clear priorities. The best leaders listen before prescribing, diagnose before restructuring and build collective ownership before demanding results. In this article, I share a practical four-phase roadmap for turning the first 100 days into a foundation for sustained performance. What is the most important lesson you learned when stepping into a new leadership role? #Leadership #First100Days #ExecutiveLeadership #BoardLeadership #ChangeLeadership #StrategyExecution

  • A strong boardroom does not silence disagreement, it gives it discipline and purpose. Constructive skepticism helps directors test assumptions, expose blind spots and improve decisions. The goal is not to oppose management, but to challenge thoughtfully in the organization's best interests. #CorporateGovernance #BoardLeadership #BoardEffectiveness #ConstructiveChallenge

  • Are you being managed or controlled? You used to speak up. Now you rehearse every sentence. You used to make decisions. Now you ask permission for things within your authority. You used to trust your judgement. Now you wonder whether you are the problem. That shift deserves your attention. Controlling behaviour at work can look like “support,” “high standards” or “concern for your career.” Here are 10 warning signs: 1️⃣ Nothing you do is quite right. Constant correction and subtle put-downs leave you afraid to contribute. 2️⃣ Yesterday’s instructions never happened. They deny previous agreements, leaving you questioning your memory. 3️⃣ “For your own good” limits your opportunities. They discourage you from applying, speaking up or becoming more visible. 4️⃣ Your professional circle gets smaller. They restrict access to colleagues, information and relevant meetings. 5️⃣ Approval depends on keeping them happy. Support turns into silence or exclusion when you disagree. 6️⃣ Every small decision needs a defence. Routine accountability becomes interrogation even within your agreed authority. 7️⃣ Raising a concern makes you “the problem.” Your question about their behaviour becomes a discussion about your attitude. 8️⃣ The rules keep moving. You deliver what was agreed, only to discover a new, unspoken requirement. 9️⃣ You are pressured to commit before you can think. Requests for information or reasonable time are treated as resistance. 🔟 Your boundaries become a loyalty test. A reasonable “no” is labelled a lack of commitment. One difficult interaction does not establish a pattern. But when you repeatedly feel less confident, less connected and less able to exercise judgement, pay attention. Keep factual records. Confirm expectations in writing. Seek support through an appropriate workplace channel. A useful leadership test: Are people becoming more capable or more afraid of your reaction? Which of these behaviours gets mistaken for “good management” most often? ♻️ Repost this for someone who may need to hear it today. #Leadership #WorkplaceCulture #Management
