Snowflakers ❄️! 📢 SQL Tip – Detect value changes across a series of rows! Read more 🚨🧐 Meet CONDITIONAL_CHANGE_EVENT — perfect when you need to track when a value changes compared to the previous row, based on a custom condition. 🛠️⚙️ In this example: 1️⃣ A counter increases only when the voltage changes 2️⃣ The condition checks when the voltage value equals 0 3️⃣ If the value doesn’t change, the counter stays the same 📋✨ Each detected change is highlighted, making it easy to spot transitions and understand exactly when and why the value increments. 💡 Simple, powerful, and super useful for time-series analysis! 🫵 Forget to using complex SQL queries! ♾️ Follow me here and Medium https://lnkd.in/dZjfenTm for more tips! 📃 Doc reference: https://lnkd.in/dxX6ADgR May the ❄ be with you! #Snowflake #DataSuperhero #DataEngineering #Monitoring #Snowsight #SQL #snowflakedevelopers #dataengineering #superdataheroes
🔥 Snowflakers, MAX() gives you the highest value… but what if you need another value from that SAME row? 🔥 Read more 👇👇👇 🚨 Meet MAX_BY and MIN_BY — two Snowflake aggregate functions that return the value associated with the highest or lowest ordering value. 🚨 Think beyond the timestamp: ❌ MAX(event_timestamp) returns the latest timestamp ✅ MAX_BY(order_status, event_timestamp) returns the status recorded at that latest timestamp ❄️ Try this: SELECT customer_id, MIN_BY(order_status, event_timestamp) AS first_status, MAX_BY(order_status, event_timestamp) AS latest_status FROM demo_order_events GROUP BY customer_id; 🎯 The result gives you the first and latest status for every customer — directly from the rows with the earliest and latest timestamps. Here’s why these functions are so useful: 1️⃣ 🔽 MIN_BY(value, order_by) returns the value linked to the minimum order_by value 2️⃣ 🔼 MAX_BY(value, order_by) returns the value linked to the maximum order_by value 3️⃣ 📦 Add a third argument to return multiple associated values as an ARRAY — up to 1,000 4️⃣ 🧹 NULL ordering values are ignored; if every ordering value is NULL, the result is NULL ✅ Perfect for: • 🛒 First and latest order status • 📡 Most recent device reading • ⚙️ Initial and final process state • 🏆 Product associated with the highest sales value • 📈 Top-N values linked to a ranking metric ⚠️ Important: ties are non-deterministic. If multiple rows share the same minimum or maximum ordering value, Snowflake can return any tied row. Resolve ties in your data or query design whenever the result must be deterministic. 🫵 Look for queries where you calculate MIN() or MAX() and then need another column from that row. MAX_BY and MIN_BY may express that intent much more clearly! ♾️ Follow me for more Snowflake SQL features and data engineering tips! 📖 MAX_BY reference: https://lnkd.in/d8DWU8uB 📖 MIN_BY reference: https://lnkd.in/ddMx9VTB May the ❄ be with you! #Snowflake #DataSuperHeroe #SQL #MAXBY #MINBY #DataEngineering #AnalyticsEngineering #SQLTips #AggregateFunctions #DataAnalytics #DataModeling #CloudData #DataWarehouse #DeveloperTips #SnowflakeSQL
