UTM links for LinkedIn creator campaigns: one link per post

A practical naming system for LinkedIn creator campaign URLs: what to put in each UTM field, how to avoid duplicate tags, and how to verify the link before publishing.

A LinkedIn creator campaign needs one shareable link per post. If three creators use the same generic campaign URL, you can see a campaign total but cannot tell which post brought the visit. If each creator invents a different UTM scheme, your reporting fragments before the first post goes live.

The simple fix is a shared naming rule, a unique post code and one pre-publication test. You can make the link with Naano's free creator campaign UTM builder; the decisions behind it are below.

Use four fields for four different jobs

Google Analytics defines utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign as the core campaign parameters, and utm_content as a way to distinguish creative variants. Its URL-builder documentation also explains that values are case-sensitive. A repeatable convention for an organic LinkedIn creator programme is:

FieldExampleKeep it stable across
utm_sourcelinkedinEvery post on LinkedIn
utm_mediumcreatorEvery organic creator placement
utm_campaignq4_devtools_frEvery post in this campaign
utm_contentcreator_042_post_01One specific post

The creator_042 value is an internal code, not a personal name. Your private tracker holds the code, the creator, the post URL and the brief. A URL is public: it may appear in a browser history, a forwarded message or an analytics export. Do not add email addresses, prospect names or confidential campaign notes.

Start with the final landing page, including any non-campaign query parameter the page needs. Add the four fields above. If the URL already carries old UTM tags, replace them rather than appending a second utm_campaign or utm_content. Leave a page fragment such as #demo in place if the landing page uses it.

For a destination such as https://example.com/demo?plan=team, the resulting pattern is:

https://example.com/demo?plan=team&utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=creator&utm_campaign=q4_devtools_fr&utm_content=creator_042_post_01

Change only the creator and post code for the next placement. Use the free builder to generate and copy the link without uploading your inputs. Google Analytics has a general campaign URL builder too; the Naano version keeps the fields tailored to creator posts.

Verify the destination before handing it over

A tagged URL is a label, not evidence of a measured visit. Open it in a private window. Confirm that the page loads, that redirects preserve the parameters and that the intended conversion works. Then check the actual visit and test conversion in the analytics property your team will use for reporting. Exclude your own test from the final result.

Record the approved link beside the post code. Ask the creator to paste it unchanged. After publication, save the public post URL and review the same post after a fixed reporting window, such as seven days. The campaign tracking template provides the remaining fields and a weekly decision routine.

Read tagged traffic with its limits visible

The tagged link can help identify visits that reached your site through that link. It does not capture readers who search for the brand later, share the post privately or return on another device. Consent settings and redirect behaviour can also leave gaps. Keep observed site visits separate from LinkedIn link clicks; they come from different systems and need not match.

When you report results, include the source of each number and the date you read it. If the destination analytics failed, mark traffic as unavailable. Do not turn an unmeasured visit into a zero or an estimated lead. For the next step, the sponsored post performance report keeps observed engagement, clicks, visits and leads in separate rows. On Naano, every post gets its own tracked link; with Managed Campaigns, the Naano team also runs the briefs and the reporting for you.

FAQ

What UTM parameters should a LinkedIn creator post use?

Use a consistent source (linkedin), medium (creator), and campaign code across the campaign. Give each post a distinct content code so its traffic can be separated. Keep the private mapping from codes to creator names in your campaign tracker.

Does adding UTM tags prove that a creator drove leads?

No. A tagged URL identifies a possible traffic source. You still need the destination analytics to record visits and the conversion event to work. Redirects, consent and other touchpoints can limit attribution.
